Why Clear Writing Wins More Than Clever Writing

Clever writing draws attention to itself. Clear writing draws attention to the idea, and that is almost always the better trade for a reader deciding whether to trust you.

Whether it is a business proposal, a legal memo, or a dissertation chapter, the reader is not grading you on vocabulary. They are asking one question: did this document make its case? Every sentence that exists to impress rather than inform works against that goal.

What clarity actually looks like

Short, direct sentences. One idea per paragraph. Structure the reader can follow without re-reading. None of this is a lesser skill than clever phrasing — it is usually the harder one.

At Crest Point Writers, every draft is checked against a simple test: could someone outside the subject follow the argument on a first read? If not, it gets rewritten, not dressed up further.
